Date: 2021-04-27
The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy and International Master's Program in International Studies, National Chengchi University co-hosted a seminar for Dr. William A. Callahan, the TFD’s International Visiting Fellow, at 10:10-11:40 on 21 April, 2021 at the TFD.
Dr. Callahan delivered a presentation entitled “Visualizing Community: Nationalism, Democracy and Civic Education in Taiwan and China” and was moderated by Dr. Chung-Chian Teng, Professor and Chair, International Master's Program in International Studies, NCCU. Dr. Chiung-Chiu Huang, Associate Professor, Graduate Institute of East Asian Studies, was invited as the seminar's discussant.
Dr. Callahan has made extensive comparison between Taiwan and China regarding the elementary school civic education text book so as to illustrate how community was built through pictures from 1963 to 2021. He notices that from Civil Wars, Korean War, and Cold War period to democratization till now, Taiwan’s projection of good global citizen shifts from geopolitical & ideological, to diverse & inclusive views of foreign peoples and places; while China on the other hand, moves from socialist internationalism to ethno-nationalism which essentialized racial difference. He drew conclusions that democratization is the dynamic process in which civic education plays key role in building democracy community through visual and affective experiences.
