Date: 2022-07-31

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) is calling for nominations for the 17th Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award (ADHRA)!

What is the ADHRA?

There was no award recognizing efforts in developing or sustaining democracy and human rights in Asia until 2006. As the first national democracy assistance foundation in Asia, the TFD established the ADHRA — the first democracy and human rights award in Asia — to support courageous individuals and groups who build democracy, stand up for justice, and defend human rights. The ADHRA is annually awarded to one individual or organization that has made significant contributions to the advancement of democracy or human rights in Asia through peaceful means.

Past ADHRA laureates include:

2006: Reporters Without Borders (France)
2007: Dr. Cynthia Maung (Burma)
2008: Dr. Sima Samar (Afghanistan)
2009: Mr. Kim Seong-Min (North Korea)
2010: Rescue Foundation (India)
2011: Boat People SOS (The United States)
2012: ECPAT International (Thailand)
2013: Karen Human Rights Group (Burma)
2014: Centre for Human Rights and Development (Sri Lanka)
2015: Ms. Sunita Danuwar (Nepal)
2016: Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances (The Philippines)
2017: The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections, BERSIH 2.0 (Malaysia)
2018: Gusdurian Network Indonesia (Indonesia)
2019: Diplomacy Training Program (Australia)
2020: Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (Australia)
2021: Ms. Humaira Rasuli (Afghanistan)

What does the 17th ADHRA consist of?

The laureate will be awarded a US$100,000 grant and award at an official ceremony in Taipei on Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day.
